What conditions do neurophysiotherapists treat?
Neurophysiotherapists specialise in the assessment and treatment of adults with concerns moving about as a result of damage to the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves or muscles.
This list is not exhaustive as there are many other neurological conditions involving brain and/ or spinal cord! Please contact Specialist Physiotherapy to discuss your needs, if it is not included on the list.
Examples of these are:
- Stroke
- Acquired brain injury (head injury)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Parkinsonism
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spinal cord injury
- Cerebral palsy
- Guillain Barre Syndrome
- Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy
- Brain or spinal cord tumour
- Muscular Dystrophies e.g. Facio scapular humeral muscular dystrophy
- Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
- Elderly people requiring rehabilitation after hospitalisation, illness, surgery or falls.

Common issues that arise:
- Weakness in legs, arms and/or trunk muscles.
- Balance problems when moving about indoors or outdoors.
- Coordinating movements.
- Pain, stiffness or spasticity in legs or arms which hinders movement.
- Difficulty using hands for everyday activities.
- Concerns about repeated falls or a fear of falling.
- Needing advice and support to optimise ability when coping with a deteriorating condition.
- Feeling that there is more potential for moving about.
- Wanting expert assessment, advice and support to achieve goals that you have in mind.
- Getting disheartened and need a physiotherapy review to keep you going in the right direction.
- Needing physiotherapy but unable to access it via the NHS, or as a ‘stop gap’ whilst waiting for an appointment.
